Noted author of graphic novel related to heroin addiction offers free talk

NORTHAMPTON –  Amid an increase in opioid overdose-related deaths locally and nationally, the Hampshire HOPE opioid prevention coalition has teamed up other local organizations to present a virtual event featuring Jarrett J. Krosoczka, celebrated author of “Hey, Kiddo,” a memoir about growing up in a family facing addiction and finding meaning and purpose through art.

Held Tuesday, Dec. 14, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., the event is free and open to all, though people must register to attend. Registration can be done at this link or by visiting the Hampshire HOPE website.

Krosoczka, a New York Times best-selling author and illustrator is known for writing books with humor, heart, compassion and a respect for young readers. He has published more than 30 books, including the acclaimed “Lunch Lady” graphic novels and the popular “Platypus Police Squad” middle-grade novels. “Hey Kiddo,” his most recent book, released in October 2018, was a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.

He first spoke publicly about his mother’s addiction to heroin and his childhood being raised by grandparents in a widely share TED Talk. “Hey, Kiddo,” is a young adult graphic novel/memoir that describes his teenage years and how art became a way to cope with his mother’s battle with addiction and the absence of his birth father. In his presentation, Krosoczka will talk about his creative and research process in crafting a work of art around his personal struggles and how an artistic pursuit can lead to healing.

Hampshire HOPE is the regional opioid prevention coalition based in the Northampton Health Department. Co-sponsors for the event are the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Northampton Recovery Center, the South Hadley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition, the Northampton Prevention Coalition. the SPIFFY coalition and the Quaboag Hills Substance Use Alliance.
