Easthampton woman to be arraigned in connection with December pedestrian fatality

Ruby Schmid, 62, of Easthampton, is expected to be arraigned in Northampton District Court, on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 on charges of negligent motor vehicle homicide, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a civil crosswalk infraction, in connection with a Dec. 3, 2018 crash on Cottage Street in Easthampton that claimed the life of Denise Herzog, 63, of Easthampton.

Police allege Herzog was walking across Cottage Street, in a marked crosswalk, when she was fatally struck by Schmid, who was driving a gray Pontiac minivan. Herzog was pronounced dead the following day.

Negligent motor vehicle homicide is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 2 ½ years in the House of Correction.  A conviction carries a 15-year loss of license.

Easthampton Police, Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services, and Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section investigated the collision.
