Driver involved in Greenfield collision dies


The driver of the civilian vehicle involved in a collision with a Greenfield Police cruiser on Sunday evening, October 1, has been pronounced dead.

James Arcellana, 29, believed to be of New Hampshire, was pronounced dead on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.  His official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Arcellana was driving a Subaru westbound on Sanderson Street when he attempted to cross High Street, resulting in a collision between his vehicle and a southbound Greenfield Police cruiser.  Arcellana and a passenger of the Subaru were treated at Franklin Medical Center and later Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for their injuries.  The Greenfield Police officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, and later released.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (“CARS”), and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
